Hence, a significant amount of study has been devoted to the creation of software solutions for businesses, enabling the creation of software applications without repeatedly using hand coding and programming. One of those solutions comes in the form of low-code/no-code. In their report on new development platforms for customer-facing applications, the term "low-code" was popularised by Forrester in 2014. 

There are multiple definitions of what a low-code platform is, but according to Robert Waszkowski, a low-code platform “is a set of tools for programmers and non-programmers. It enables the quick generation and delivery of business applications with minimum effort to write in a coding language and requires the least possible effort for the installation and configuration of environments, and training and implementation”.

In November 2020, Forbes predicted that low-code technology would be the most disruptive trend in 2021. And, according to Forrester's research, by the end of 2021, the usage of low-code platforms will accelerate extensively. Gartner estimates that by 2024, such usage is projected to command 65% of application development. 

Low-code solutions are becoming more popular for a number of reasons. Firstly, they represent a significant shift in how we manage, foster, and support innovation in our organisations as well as the democratisation of technology. They allow for faster development and deployment of applications. 

When it comes to the shortage of skilled developers, and the demand for their skills continues to outstrip the supply, low-code platforms are seen as one of the solutions to help bridge that gap by allowing non-technical users to create and maintain applications. 

By providing a visual, drag-and-drop interface, low-code platforms enable the simplification of the process of creating and customizing applications. Since low-code platforms do not require extensive coding knowledge, a wider range of users, such as business analysts and subject matter experts, can contribute to the development process.

This allows for faster development times and more efficient use of resources, enabling process managers or analysts to drag and drop pre-set elements without the requirement for IT professionals to increase process efficiency through business intelligence.

Besides, while streamlining and simplifying their job, professional developers can produce enterprise-class apps with little hand-coding, which reduces the amount of time it takes to deliver business applications. All in all, they allow for greater collaboration and participation in the development process. This can lead to more accurate and effective solutions that are better aligned with business needs.

Finally, low-code solutions can also enable companies to quickly adapt to changing business needs and new technologies. Many research magazines believe platforms with low-code/no-code (LCNC) capabilities have the potential to address these issues and accelerate business innovations. This is becoming increasingly important as companies are looking for ways to improve their digital transformation and respond faster to the dynamic digital landscape.
